The International Olympics Committee held a press conference on Wednesday confirming and regretting reports that larger-than-needed amounts of food were ordered due to a miscalculation at the Tokyo 2020 games, particularly at the opening ceremony.

According to Takaya Masa, Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee spokesperson, staff and volunteers "were not able to consume" all the food that was ordered, adding that "from this week, measures to optimise the volume of orders are being implemented in each venue."

"We regret the large amount of over-ordering that has occurred until now, but please note that surplus food is not disposed, but recycled into animal feed and bio gasses," Masa told the press.

Videos have surfaced online showing large amounts of bento boxes and bread being discarded.

SOT, Takaya Masa, Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee spokesperson: "Tokyo 2020 can confirm that there has been a surplus of food at various venues across the venues particularly on the day of the opening ceremony at the Olympic Stadium. The large number of staff on duty meant that order volumes were large and a lot of the food was not consumed."

SOT, Takaya Masa, Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee spokesperson: "Obviously if compared to the amount we ordered to the suppliers, there has been quite a large volume for the staff members they were not able to consume. That was one reason for the food loss. What I want to tell you is that from this week, measures to optimise the volume of orders are being implemented in each venue. We regret the large amount of over-ordering that has occurred until now, but please note that surplus food is not disposed but recycled into animal feed and bio gasses."
