Taliban members carrying assault rifles and rocket launchers enforced a checkpoint on a highway in Eastern Kabul on Saturday. Taliban members were seen inspecting cars on the Kabul-Jalalabad highway in the Surobi-district of Kabul.
"We are here to serve our people, and the situation is critical. We are here to prevent those who are stealing, who are looting, and stealing cars," claimed a Taliban member.
The recent Taliban offensive followed the announcement in April that the US and other NATO states would be withdrawing their forces from the country. Former president Ashraf Ghani has since fled Afghanistan and the US has evacuated its embassy staff from Kabul, as have many other NATO states.
Prior to the Taliban's seizure of power, China, India, Pakistan, Russia and the US, among other world powers, had been pushing for an end to the conflict in Afghanistan.
SOT, Taliban member (Dari): "As you see our friends are checking the vehicles. It is because we are here to serve our people, and the situation is critical. We are here to prevent those who are stealing, who are looting, and stealing cars, and we have seized some stolen cars."
SOT, Taliban member (Dari): "I would like to assure all the people to continue their lives and continue their work and commerce. There is no problem, according to the order of the Islamic Emirate and Amir al-Muminin (Commander of the faithful) to capture and punish those who are opposed to us."
