The first book of Maccabees accounts for the period in which Israel was under both the rule of the Ptolemaic and Seleucid Empires. The feast of Lights- known as Chanukkah is commenced at this point. While Chanukkah is not a feast required in the bible, it is observed by many who which to memorialize events leading to the cleansing of the Temple after its desecration.
