President Rodrigo Roa Duterte convenes the National Task Force (NTF) Against COVID-19 and several medical experts at the Heroes Hall in Malacañan Palace to discuss the latest updates and efforts being implemented in containing the threat of the ‘Omicron’ COVID-19 variant.
With more studies regarding the Omicron variant still underway, President Duterte said that the government is ramping up preparations for the possible entry of the new variant and vows to implement all measures to safeguard the safety of the Filipino people. With this in hand, he reiterates his call to his ‘kababayans’ to get vaccinated at the soonest time and strictly follow the minimum public health standards.
First detected in South Africa, the new COVID-19 variant was declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a variant of concern on November 24, 2021. Based on preliminary studies, Omicron is said to have a large number of mutations, which means the risk of infection with the variant is very high. This has forced several countries to enact stricter border controls and implement additional restrictions to prevent the further spread of the virus.
