Federal government 'not considering a cash splash' to raise vaccination rates

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says the government is “not considering a cash splash” to entice people to get the COVID-19 vaccine such as the Labor proposal to pay $300 to the fully vaccinated.

Mr Morrison confirmed there was no plan to have a lottery allowing those who are double jabbed to have a chance to win but said Operation COVID Shield had “considered many types of incentives”.

“We’re not considering splashing $6 billon to people who by and large have already had the vaccine, that is not the disciplined, informed approach the government is taking,” he said.

Mr Morrison said the government had “no issues with incentives” but called the proposal, which has been heavily endorsed by Leader of the Opposition Anthony Albanese, a “bad policy”.

“We will not be indulging the cash splash ideas of the leader of the opposition.”
